24th Annual Youth to Youth Middle School Conference

San Ramon Valley Community Against Substance Abuse and Castro Valley Community Action Network are very excited to announce the opening of registration for the 24th Annual Youth to Youth Middle School Conference taking place on March 24, 2018  The Youth to Youth High School leaders from San Ramon Valley and Castro Valley are anxious to inspire your 6th, 7th, & 8th grade students and help them discover the power of their voice.  This is an amazing day and an opportunity for young teens to spend with high school leaders who believe in the strength of being drug, alcohol and tobacco free.  But this conference is about so much more than drug and alcohol prevention.  It’s about leadership, self-confidence and empowering young people to make positive choices that impact their future.

SRV-CASA & CV-CAN, along with SRVUSD and CVUSD are so very proud of the wonderful partnership that has developed between our two communities.  This conference has been jointly sponsored for five years and for the last four years the sold out conferences have been held at California High School, Monte Vista High School and Dougherty Valley High School.  This year we are thrilled to be presenting the 2018 SRV/CV Youth to Youth Conference at Castro Valley High School, 19400 Santa Maria Ave, Castro Valley, CA

If you take a look at the blueprint for the Youth to Youth program in the San Ramon Valley that was started in 1995 and you will see thousands of successful young people who have been the foundation.  Y2Y is a place for teens and the adults who value them.  This amazing positive peer prevention program gives young people leadership now, to impact their world tomorrow, by giving life to their ideas through sharing, learning and laughing together.  Because of a Youth to Youth conference experience, change occurs both within young people and by them, making teens ready for life!

The Y2Y program was one of the pioneers in youth driven, “no-use” message, drug prevention programming.  Since 1982, three U.S. Presidents, most recently U.S. President George W. Bush, have recognized the program for outstanding efforts in youth development.  Today, the program and conferences are presented in 36 states and more than 13 countries worldwide.  Youth to Youth provides year round programming that develops and supports young people in making positive decisions for themselves, their school and their community.  Teens are seen as assets, not the problem when addressing alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention.  Youth to Youth creates opportunities for teens to support each other in decisions to be drug free and focuses on topics that youth face today, while empowering their peers to make choices that impact their future.

Youth to Youth’s principles are simple:

·        the program is youth driven,

·        every teen is given the opportunity to take on leadership roles and

·        each young person is guided in developing assets within themselves.

·        The Youth to Youth model creates opportunities for teens to support each other in decisions to be drug free.  One of the strongest predictors of adolescent drug use is association with drug using peers.  The youth staff simply says that Youth to Youth is about kids helping other kids stay drug free.  The conference is an entire day where youth get together, have fun and talk about some really important issues.

Putting high school students on the front line of drug and alcohol prevention is vital to the program.  Teens with Youth to Youth training, representing San Ramon Valley & Castro Valley prepare for the event for several months.  Joining them in their efforts are school administrators, community and service organizations and law enforcement agencies.

More than 100 high school students will work at the conference, guiding their middle school peers through skits, games, panel discussions and small-group activities.  More than 20 workshops will be offered throughout the day.  Some of the topics to be covered include building self-esteem, stress reduction, drug and alcohol abuse, positive body image, dating and relationship troubles, self-defense, jazz dancing, art, and communication skills.  True stories of teens and substance abuse will be a key element of the conference.  There will also be small group discussions, a motivational speaker and a dance at the end of the conference.

The learning and fun continues from morning till night during a Y2Y conference.   The day is very interactive, high energy and youth are kept moving from activity to activity.

If your students’  like hanging out with their friends, meeting new friends, having fun, dancing and good food – then this is the conference for them.   More than just an “event”, the Youth to Youth Middle School Conference is a way to see the best in teens and their leadership skills.
