Principal's December Message

December 14, 2017

Dear Los Cerros Families,

I would like to say Thank You for a wonderful first semester. Students have engaged in wonderful curriculum across all subjects and really shown high quality work. I have really been impressed with the politeness and communication between students and staff this semester. One of the hardest challenges for students is to talk to adults; our students are showing they can ask questions, hold quality conversations and engage in depth curricular discussions. Through all of your donations (class sections, general donations or Donor’s Choose), students are benefiting with the technology tools, new and always-changing curriculum and really able to put their personal touch on their education within their writing or work.

I would like to remind everyone that next week Monte Vista High School has finals. MVHS starts school at 8:00 am, which means getting to Los Cerros will be very difficult. If you drive your student, I recommend getting to school before 7:40 am. If your student walks or rides their bike, please remind them to pay attention and not wear earphones. If students take the bus, please make sure everyone is on time to the bus stop so the buses can get here as quickly as possible. PLEASE USE CAUTION, TAKE YOUR TIME AND BE PATIENT ON ALL STREETS.

Around campus, students are beaming with joy because of all the great student performances and activities around campus. We had a wonderful Geography Bee over the last few weeks and a strong final competition yesterday. Last week, our Choir and Band had an amazing performance that left the standing room only audience stunned and tonight our Drama performance will show even more talents of our students in Snow White and Friends. Students will have dress up days next week (Monday – Holiday Socks, Tuesday – Ugly Sweater, Wednesday – Holiday Hats, Thursday – Pajama Day).

A few words of advice as we transition to second semester are:

  1. Student expectations will increase in classes – the responsibility of completing work on time is important and credit will be lost if not done
  2. Student organization and after school scheduling should be a topic of discussion at home to make sure there is a healthy balance and everything is in order
  3. Academic work needs to be supported at home in order to ensure mastery in subjects – this can be done by reviewing assignments, reading on your own, and/or studying or reviewing concepts daily
  4. Student behaviors to one another need to promote positive social interactions, refrain from vulgar or negative speech and we (staff and parents) need to show how niceness can increase happiness

As we move through winter, students will be taking the interim assessments for CAASPP, the State Assessment. Our goal is for each student to take at least three practice blocks. This will provide our staff data that supports classroom instruction.

In November, I sent out a survey to incoming 5th, 6th and 7th grade families to discuss a flexible start and end time as a bell schedule (essentially adding an 8th period at the end of the day). The result came back that 75% of families wanted to keep the schedule as it is with many comments regarding traffic congestion at 3:15 pm and no TRAFFIX buses for transport. For the 2018/2019  school year, Los Cerros will keep the bell schedule as it is in regards to Start and End times.

I wish everyone a joyous holiday season and restful winter break.

Sincerely,

Evan Powell

Principal
