Principal's September Message

August 31, 2017

 

Dear Los Cerros Families,

 

We are three weeks into the school year and everything is going great! Students are engaging in their curriculum and really showing strong communicative skills in class and around campus. I am really impressed by our students and their willingness to say, “Hello” and smile to each other and adults around campus. I thanked our students during our Back to School Assembly for how awesome they were in listening and being respectful. I am very proud of our students and they have begun the 2017-2018 school year.

 

The Run for Education is on Sunday, October 1st. We have a fun competition against Stone Valley Middle School to see who can have the most sign ups! Today is a deadline in which we need a few more sign-ups in which we qualify for $1000 that comes back to the school. The principal at Stone Valley and I are competing to put a pie in each other’s face and have to wear the opposing school gear to work one day. Don’t forget, the magazine drive has its second turn in next week! I saw a lot of students receiving some really cool prizes on Wednesday and hopefully students will continue to earn those prizes.

 

Our Superintendent, Rick Schmitt, will be hosting a Fall Parent Meeting in our MPR on Monday, September 25th at 9 am for parents in our community. We invite you to come to campus and listen to him speak and engage in conversations with him.

 

I would like to thank everyone for being cautious and taking time during drop off and pick up and staying out of the bus lane before and after school. Also, if a student is riding their bike, skateboard or scooter, please be sure to remind them wear a helmet; walk in the crosswalks and to use a lock in the bike racks. If you are planning to pick your student up during lunch, please come at the beginning of lunch. We are finding there might be a little wait until the student comes to the office once students leave the MPR after the first ten minutes of lunch.

 

I know birthdays are fun for our students, however meals brought for more than just the birthday student is not allowed. Please refrain from bringing large orders of food or treats for students at lunch; it causes a lot of problems with more students than expected wanting the food and taking food that isn’t theirs. Also, please remind your students to throw away their trash and not leave it on the tables, benches or the ground. Lastly, please have your students adhere to the dress code. The two biggest concerns with dress code are shorts being way too short and graphic t-shirts with inappropriate images or sayings.

 

Each month you will get an insight to what is happening on campus from our teachers. I hope you enjoy this section.

 

 

 

What’s Happening on Campus?

 

6th Grade Science has been busy working on getting "tools" for our "science tool belt".  We just completed the science safety portion of our unit and are now working on graphing.  Graphing is a huge part of our data analysis in science and we want 6th graders to be able to make, read, and interpret a graph. Our next "tool" will be measuring in the metric system.  Keep up the great work 6th graders!

 

 

In Science 7 we have done a quick review of safety procedures in the lab. Now we have started reinforcing important concepts in scientific inquiry, good experimental procedures, proper graphing, and the different ways that scientists respond and support their data and experimental results, i.e. lab reports; claim/evidence/reasoning; etc. In a couple of weeks, we will begin learning about earth science, starting with the geologic time scale and the rock cycle.

 

In 8th grade science we enjoyed being scientists during the eclipse including observing/recording evidence of temperature changes, brightness changes and animal behavior changes. Our research and data was shared with other scientists, students and teachers around the world (including California Academy of Sciences and the Exploratorium) in order to contribute to several ongoing research projects. Currently, we are exploring earth’s movement through the solar system by modeling earth’s rotation and revolution. Together we are trying to understand why we have seasons and why the moon changes phases as well as studying gaining an understanding of why we have seasons and why the moon looks different throughout the month.

 

Core 6 is continuing to go over procedures and expectations as students become acclimated to middle school. In History we are reviewing geography and will begin our unit on Early Man soon. Language Arts is beginning strategies for writing ideas which lead into Personal Narratives. In Reading, students are reviewing basic elements of stories and choosing independent reading books. Students will be doing a 9/11 mini unit in which students conduct interviews with adults about this day and will go through a lot of info and promote tolerance and human kindness.

 

Core 8 is jumping into History & English with introductory lessons to discuss why these are valuable subjects and what academic skills we'll be focusing on throughout the year. We'll continue in English with a mini Reading Unit to learn how to find purposeful quotes within a text and discuss their meaning/importance. We'll continue in History by learning strategies to read non-fiction texts and how to take notes as we study the colonization of the U.S. while considering the perspectives of all groups involved. Also, this past Monday all 8th grade students logged into their Membean accounts and will be practicing two weeks per month to build up their vocabulary skills.

 

Counseling is offering “Stressbusters” during ACCESS for 5 Tuesdays starting 9/12 and will be conducting the SMART Goals lessons for 6th graders in science & 7th graders in core during the week of 9/18. Lastly, the famous PIRATES test taking strategy lesson will be given in 6th grade core on 9/25.

 

In Spanish 1A students are learning their numbers, months, dates, how to say their birthday, greetings, and goodbyes. After this intro, we will start learning classroom objects, "I have" and "I need," class subjects, telling time and how to talk about their schedules. They are an enthusiastic bunch and I think they will learn quickly! 

 

In Spanish 1B, we are wrapping up review of the weather, dates, class objects, greetings and goodbyes. After this we will get back into the book, chapter 4. Students will be able to talk about their activities outside of school, what they like or dislike, places around town and what one can do there (e.g. I'm going to the Post Office to buy stamps). We will concentrate on the verb "ir" (to go) and of course other verbs that have to do with what they like to do or have to do. Speaking points start today!!  Students have two weeks to see me and speak one-on-one, either during access or during lunch. ¡Hasta pronto!

 

The library will have had the whole school in for a refresher and orientation by the end of the third week of school! We are currently running I Mustache You What You Read contest where students fill out a book survey and enter to win prizes, which include I Mustache You a Question t-shirt! Upcoming events for September include Banned Books Week and Constitution Day. 

 

Mr. Briemle's Physical Education class has started our soccer unit and will explore various cross fit equipment starting next week.
