Letter from Principal & Academic Boosters
October 8, 2013
I want to extend a huge thank you to all Los Cerros parents for your flexibility during registration and for supporting your student by donating generously to all groups and departments at our school. Today I’m writing to talk about our Los Cerros Academic Boosters whose work directly funds class sections and keeps our class sizes small.
Our Academic Boosters parents commit each year to paying for classes and this year that translates to a $120,000 bill they are mandated to raise money for. Your donations at registration resulted in $100,000 of that bill being covered and we couldn’t have done it without you. Our efforts going forward will be to cover the remainder of that very important bill to fund 8 sections this academic year.
Where do these dollars go exactly? This year we were able to add 3 new electives at Los Cerros. The addition of Forensics, Computer Programming, and Speech and Debate rose to the top of a student interest survey. Look for a letter from our Forensics and Science teacher, Christy Tyler, telling you what Boosters funding means to her and our students.
Each elective offering not only brings a fresh learning opportunity for your student but creates a class section. Each section constitutes around 30 students and costs $15,000 to put in place. Without these additional classes, including electives, we could potentially have 40+ students in a classroom.
See Christy’s letter (and more to come) to see how much your dollars make a difference! I’ve always said that any donation helps at any time of the year and this year it couldn’t be more true. The Boosters Homepage makes it easy to give! I’ve asked the Boosters board to keep us updated on their progress as we work toward our Dec. 1 deadline.
Thank you for all you do,
Principal, Los Cerros Middle School

Hello Los Cerros Parents and Welcome to one of our newest electives;
This class studies the application of scientific methods and processes as it supports the law. Our students are learning how scientists work in labs that analyze evidence, write reports, and testify in court as expert witness. To learn these skills students will use science to develop a hypothesis, conduct research, make observations, and form knowledgeable conclusions. This is a very hands-on, activity-based, collaborative class, and our students are learning skills that go far beyond the classroom.
Our students have the following to say about this class:
“I like Forensics because it opens the door to a whole new world of Science that I wouldn’t have discovered. We’re doing fun projects like recreating faces from memory or pictures using computer software.”
“In Forensics we get to do really fun activities like trying to figure out murder mysteries, using computer software and games to learn about solving crimes. Lastly I like the class because we learn about fingerprints by taking our own and teachers. Forensics is my favorite class.”
Your support of Boosters added eight classes at Los Cerros this year and keeps class sizes small. If there were not these additional classes our new electives, academics, and all classes would be overcrowded.
Thanks Boosters for all you do!
