Thanks to all of you for your generous Adopt-A-Family and Warm Coat donations.  More than 30 families received your gifts as part of the Cross County Connections.  We couldn't do it without our parent volunteers!

Please be aware that all student items in the Lost and Found bin will be donated on Friday as part of the Green Valley coat drive.  Students have received this information as well during lunch.

I wish all of you a wonderful and safe holiday.  As I fly off to Virginia to be with my family I'll be thinking of you and our great community.  Happy Holidays

Summer school for middle school will be at Iron Horse Middle School June 19-July 17, 2009. Students are recommended based on 1st semester grades of D or F.

7th & 8th grade students viewed “How Rude: the 10 rules of common courtesy” last Friday in P.E.   Winter break would be a good opportunity for them to practice!  Ask them what they remember.

After the break, all students will be viewing Prevent and Protect, a short video on treating others with respect and kindness.

National School Counseling Week is coming  - February 2-6th.
Remember that school counselors impact the entire school through activities (i.e. Career Day) and teacher collaboration, to help ALL students be successful.  We invite you to drop by the counseling office and take a look at the resources that are available.

Our 8th grade parent night will be coming up in February 19th at 7pm.  You will be receiving a survey in advance.  The evening consists of some tips to prepare your 8th grader for high school, as well as an interactive panel of high school counselor, middle school counselor, high school teacher, middle school teacher and several current MV students.

Academic
We have approximately 3 weeks after winter break before the end of 1st semester. This is a good time to make sure your students is tracking their assignments, knows (and uses) their school loop password and is taking advantage of the many opportunities for success during the day (i.e. math, homework support, Spanish study sessions etc.).

On July 19, 2006 California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law, Assembly Bill 1802.  The bill provides funding for additional counseling service to all students in grades 7-12.  These are services specific to progress towards promotion/graduation, passing the California High School Exit Examination, career technical education and educational options.  Immediately following winter break, Ms. White and Ms. Schubb will beginning the in classroom presentations and individual meetings with all 7th & 8th grade students. Counselors will also hold targeted conferences with parents and students in grade 7 & 8 who scored “Below Basic” or “Far Below Basic” on their 6th or 7th grade English and/or Math STAR assessments. These meetings will be the next 2 weeks prior to winter break. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ms. Schubb nschubb@srvusd.net

District Holds Community Forums to Discuss Financial Crisis

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District is encouraging parents and community members to attend one of four forums scheduled in January to discuss the impact of the current State budget crisis on local education. “The state of California is in a very serious financial crisis, and as a ‘ward of the state’ this school district and this community face an extremely grim financial situation,” said Superintendent Steven Enoch. “The district also has the added challenge of a parcel tax election this spring. The combination of the state economic meltdown and the prospect of a failure of the parcel tax will result in a drastic reduction in the quality of education in our district. It is for these reasons that we need to talk with our community.”

The forums will provide the district with opportunities to share more details about these challenges and to hear community input related to the preservation of local public education. The Board of Education will most likely act in late January to place a parcel tax on the ballot in the spring, so the forums will give parents and community members an opportunity to help shape the measure before it goes to the voters. The district’s existing parcel tax is set to expire in June 2009.

“We are also strongly encouraging community members who do not have children in the district to attend the forums, as the quality of our schools has a direct impact on property values and the overall quality of the communities our district serves,” said Enoch.

The forums are designed to last approximately 1 ½ hours, and will include information about the district budget and financial projections, as well as time for community input and small group discussion. Each forum will be identical in content so parents and community members can attend the forum that best fits into their schedule. To RSVP, visit the San Ramon Valley Council of PTA’s website at: http://www.srvcouncilpta.org/ParentEd/Survey/TakeSurvey.aspx
